Emotional quotient vs intelligent quotient

Traditionally, people are more conscious of developing intelligent quotient in themselves. Academic knowledge, logical and analytical skills were given more priority. People tend to be influenced by those people whose intelligence quotient are high. But later it was realized, those who have better emotional quotient have a better tendency to be efficient and productive. Emotional quotient helps one to understand his own emotions, motivates himself and control his emotion in conflicts and distress. If someone has a good emotional quotient, one can develop intelligent quotient also in oneself. Good emotional quotient helps the person in his career too, as there is lots of human interaction and emotion exchange during career development.

Verbal and non-verbal emotions

There are two types of emotions expressions verbal and non- verbal. Verbal expressions of emotions are through words and non- verbal emotional communications are done through hands, eyes, facial expressions, eyelids, body etc. Besides verbal communications, emotions can also be communicated through non- verbal ways too. Anger, jealousy, love, enthusiasm, care etc. changes the body language of the human being also. Even human being communicates his emotions with the help of both- verbal and non-verbal ways. Every human being when communicates- use combinations of verbal and non-verbal ways.

Can emotional intelligence be learned?

Many people have a myth that emotional intelligence comes from birth and it can’t be learned. Emotional intelligence can be developed through learning. The basic process of learning emotional intelligence is to get aware of your emotions properly, understand them in a matured way and manage them efficiently. Emotional intelligence is not a gift of God, but science which can be learned and decoded by right focus. One has to give time to understand emotional intelligence and practically implement them in their personal life. One should have confidence in themselves that emotions can also be controlled and managed with willpower and intellect.

Benefits of emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence has many benefits for humans. First emotional intelligence gives you control on yourself. You can control your mood swings. Emotional intelligence allows you to understand other’s emotions also and how to deal with them. Emotional intelligence gives you control on over- expression of your emotions like jealousy, hatred, excitement, nervousness, frustration, anger, attachment etc. Emotional intelligence gives you benefit in relationship bonding, career, politics, creativity, imagination, self-management, decision making, leadership etc. Even your emotional intelligence can help you in building relationships with other creatures and animals too.

Emotional intelligence and health

Emotional intelligence also helps in maintaining good mental as well as physical health. People who have low emotional quotient react according to their moods and are not able to control their minds and just sway with their emotions of jealousy, anger, hatred, excitement, nervousness, frustrations etc. This creates stress in their minds and affects mental health as well as physical health. On the other hand, those people who are good in their emotional intelligence, they deal with their consciousness on an emotional plane better way and keep their mental health and physical health in balance.

 

Measuring emotional intelligence

Now the question arises can we measure emotional intelligence? Emotions are intangible in nature. One can’t see, weigh, count or find the volume of them. They can only be felt. So can we measure the intelligence behind managing one’s emotions? Many psychiatrists have made models to measure emotional intelligence. Though there is not yet any accurate model developed to measure emotional intelligence. The basic model is developed on the basis of making questionnaires and scoring them. Another method to measure is through interviewing and scoring them. These all methods are qualitative, not quantitative. Emotional intelligence is measured based on the perception of the individual. There is not yet any measuring instrument developed to scan the emotional intelligence of the brain.

Future research in emotional intelligence

Lots of research are going on in emotional intelligence. Corporates and businesses are understanding the needs of implementation of emotional intelligence in their organizations. Wherever there are dealings with human beings, emotional intelligence plays a vital role. Even in leadership skills, emotional intelligence is very important. Researchers are also trying to understand emotional intelligence and trying to implement in robots/ computers in form of artificial intelligence. Emotional intelligence is also studied to learn how can they impact in decision making.

Adding emotions to computers/ robots

This is the new field where lots of research going on. The understanding of emotions and developing them inside machines is some new project going on worldwide. Already lots of studies have been done on an artificial neural network to make robots think by itself. Developing proper reflexive action in robots is one of the biggest challenges in today’s age. As in humans, we see lots of emotions like anger, jealousy, love, enthusiasm, motivation etc. are there. Can these emotions be created in machines and used by them with lots of intelligence? Can robots become the companion of human beings in terms of emotional exchange? These new topic are studied meticulously.
